General Purpose of the Job
The Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership, direction, management and oversight for all the Centre’s activities. In particular, the ED will lead the Centre’s advocacy work, play a significant role in fund-raising and external relations, and ensure the financial health of the organization.
The successful candidate will have substantial knowledge of Sudan and/or other countries in the region, and will have experience conducting human rights research and advocacy. The ED will have a successful track-record in management of a team, preferably in a human rights organization. She or he will have excellent networking skills, team spirit, and appropriate language skills.

Skills and qualifications
Substantive experience in senior management in a non-profit organization, business or government department
Master’s degree or equivalent
Expertise in Sudan
Substantive experience in programme development and management, and fundraising
Substantive experience in human rights research and advocacy, or research and advocacy in related fields
Knowledge of human rights law, international policy, rights-based approaches to development, humanitarian assistance, or other relevant field(s)
Leadership skills, tact, diplomacy, and ease in a multi-cultural environment
Proven ability to work as part of a team and to delegate, to hold open discussions with colleagues but also to make difficult decisions
Experience in creating, monitoring and managing institutional budgets
Ability to meet deadlines under pressure
Proven commitment to the pursuit of social justice, equality and principles of neutrality and independence
Flexibility in working hours and readiness to travel
Ability to work with partners and other non-governmental organizations where appropriate
Spoken and written fluency in both Arabic and English
Description of duties
Programme oversight
Coordinate the development and implementation of programmes and promote harmonization between programmatic areas in the organization
Manage staff and resources effectively to ensure implementation of projects and development of programmes
Ensure top quality human rights monitoring and reporting on major developments in Sudan, and their dissemination to all relevant stakeholders including policymakers, donors, journalists and activists
Oversee production of all reports; manage the editing process and ensure quality control in both English and Arabic
Manage the Centre’s management-level staff and develop appropriate supervision policies and monitor staff and consultants engaged in projects in Sudan
Ensure security protocols are in place, in collaboration with staff with responsibility for security
Support the professional development of Centre staff
Lead recruitment in consultation with the Board of Directors
Project development and management
Oversee development of proposals and budgets for research, publication, and other programmes; prepare bids and proposals for donor-specified projects and evaluations that accord with the Centre’s aims and principles
Identify and recruit suitable consultants and specialists for specific projects; agree division of roles with partner organizations if applicable; manage and coordinate staff and consultants for the duration of projects; supervise project budgets and report to funders
Ensure proper documentation, including narrative reports, financial reports, and lessons learned; promote best practices within the organization
Oversee and monitor budget expenditure in consultation with the Senior Finance Officer and forecast and manage interventions as necessary
Ensure a database for documentation, including sensitive materials and contacts, in consultation with staff and keep relevant project records up to date in database
Fundraising and communications
Seek new funding opportunities and develop programmes and projects, in consultation with senior staff, appropriate for submission to potential funders. Represent the Centre in discussions with donors, international organizations and officials from governments and at conferences
Publicize the Centre’s work and help raise its profile internationally and in the region through participation in public events and official functions and through media appearances
Lead strategic advocacy initiatives of the Centre to ensure its impact in line with institutional objectives
Strategic development
Advance the Centre’s strategic planning process in collaboration with all staff, including interns
Develop programmatic objectives and policies.
Develop and implement an annual work plan for the Centre’s programmes in consultation with staff.
Develop and implement where needed policies and procedures for the organisation including on financial, personnel and programmatic issues.
