Snapshot of School for Life:

School for Life Foundation (SFL) is a not-for-profit organisation working in rural Uganda.

We empower communities to help themselves and create their own opportunities. We do this by providing a quality education and associated services, including employment and healthcare.

In 2018, we will run 3 schools which can be found an hour and a half away from Uganda’s capital Kampala. They are located across two campuses, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from each other. To date we have raised more than A$5 million and mobilised the support of thousands of people around the world who have helped us:

· Educate 560 students annually

· Employ more than 120 adults in related roles

· Train and employ 15 women as tailors

· Build an agriculture and animal husbandry program

· Provide 3 nutritious meals a day for all our staff and students

· Provide clean drinking water to our communities

· Access to health care through a clinic and community outreach programs.

SFL now seeks an adaptable, proficient and highly motivated professional to join our team as Finance Manager on the ground in Uganda.

Key Objectives:

· To ensure the efficient and effective management of the School for Life Foundation finances.

· To work with finance staff to continue to develop appropriate financial systems, policies, processes and controls.

· To support and help train staff in Uganda in finance systems, policies and procedures to ensure financial accountability and sustainability for the organisation.

· Further embed financial controls and protocols.

Detailed responsibilities:

· Finance

o Ensure accurate and efficient financial management of the organisation’s income and expenditure.

o Petty cash – requests, approvals, reconciliation.

o Cash on hand (in safe) – requests, approvals, daily reconciliation.

o Employee cash advances (operational) – recording, approval, weekly reconciliation.

o Compile monthly finance reports, including cash flow statements, income and expenditure accounts and bank reconciliations, actuals versus budget and weekly cash position statements.

o Prepare financial information for monthly and end of year management accounts and liaise with the Auditors as required.

o Take ownership of the Excel budget/forecast model and update quarterly in conjunction with the CEO, Uganda Country Director and other managers to produce a budget/forecast for approval.

o Ensure efficient processing and record keeping of funds received, payment of invoices and management of bank accounts and cash flow.

o Submission of statutory returns.

o Send monthly request for funds and budgets to CEO, Australia for approval and processing.

o Ensure receipt of agreed donations from Australia.

o Ensure School for Life has appropriate Financial Procedures Manual for use both within the team in Uganda.

o Remain up to date on non-profit accounting best practices, policies and procedures and all relevant legislations in Uganda.

o Preparation of payroll, PAYE tax and NSSF (Uganda Social Security contributions).

Required Qualifications and Experience

· Minimum six years of experience in a similar finance role, in corporate or not for profit organisations.

· Proven expertise in the use of accounting software packages. Proficiency in MYOB is highly desirable.

· High level proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.

· Analytical and problem solving skills.

· A self-starter with enthusiasm and initiative that can also manage ambiguity, the ability to respond adeptly to rapidly changing priorities and works well under pressure.

· Collaborative team player, willing to support the shared goals of the team.

· Demonstrated commitment to SFL’s mission and ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about SFL’s mission and programs.

· Proven ability to make effective decisions and solve problems effectively, and creatively.
