The Danish Refugee Council is an International non-governmental organization, which promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over the world. In Uganda, DRC assists the refugees from neighboring countries mainly DR Congo and South Sudan in the South West, West and West Nile region of the country. DRC’s assistance to refugees have been both emergency assistance to address the short term influxes from the neighboring countries as well as to address the sustainable solutions for the refugees. DRC is currently implementing a multi donor WASH response to address live saving humanitarian WASH needs amongst the refugees as well as supporting local communities as part for the ReHoPE strategy.
Job Summary:
The Water Trucking Assistant will play a focal role in the implementation of WASH programs through Water Trucking activities in Imvepi Settlement camp. The incumbent will be required to guide the implementation of the above component of WASH projects, providing an insight into cultural sensitivity and thoroughness of communication to the beneficially communities, as well as assisting to see that the activities are implemented in an all-inclusive, timely and participatory manner in the assigned locations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Work in close guidance with the Water Trucking Officer to ensure the monitoring of the water trucking operation, this includes water delivery to each site from its production source.
• Ensure all water trucking drivers follow the agreed route to deliver water in good time, report immediately to the Water Trucking Officer on any irregularity in this regard.
• Ensure all documentations is counter signed by the designated and responsible persons, this include refugee’s representatives.
• Ensuring that good quality of water is delivered to the beneficiaries through conducting regular physio chemical and FRC tests both at the water source and delivery points.
• Update and keep record and data on the daily water production monitoring sheet and submitting it to Water Trucking Officer on a weekly basis for reporting.
• Supervise masons, contractors and unskilled laborers during repairs and construction of WASH related facilities (water tap-stands, valve chambers, operator sheds, pipe installations & repairs and other water works).
• Responsible for the safe keeping of all water supply tools and materials and at the same time tracking and keeping records on the same
• Supervise the borehole attendants/operators to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the beneficiaries
• Offer technical support to the borehole attendants, tap-stand monitors and WASH Committees in the daily operations and O&M
• Lead the repair team in pressure regulation for equitable portable water distribution in the reticulation system, in line with the set water regime and SPHERE/UNCHR standards
• Work together with WASH Committees, Community leadership in the field in identification of problematic areas of water reticulation systems with a view of providing sustainable solutions
• Build and maintain good relationships with local authorities, other organizations and actors linking to the relevant sector.
• Perform any other duties as they may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
• The ideal candidate for Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Water Trucking Assistant job placement should hold a Diploma in Water Engineering, Public Health, Environment Health Science and any other related field from a recognized institution, bachelor’s degree is an added advantage.
• A minimum of one year practical experience in developing countries in appropriate community Health programmes in different contexts, some of this time should have been in emergency relief programmes.
• High degree of sensitivity to the needs and priorities of disaster affected populations.
• Ability to work well under pressure and in response to changing needs.
• Familiarity with the SPHERE standards.
• Good leadership and supervisory skills and ability to foster team spirit.
• Good report writing skills and computer skills especially word processing and spreadsheets.
• Excellent inter personal and good command of English and other languages spoken in the West Nile
• Possession of a Motorbike Riding permit is mandatory.
