Business Internal Systems Auditor (BISA) – Kampala – Uganda Development Trust

About US:
Uganda Development Trust (UDET) is a consulting firm that provides Business Development Services (BDS) directly to grassroots community groups and SMEs engaged in businesses that are aimed at creating gainful employment and sustainable market outlets for smallholder farmers in Uganda. Currently, UDET is the Strategic Partner of the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and also manages an AGRA Markets Access Program in Uganda.

Job Summary: The Business Internal Systems Auditor (BISA) will carry out regular financial audits of clients’ businesses. He/she will identify business and financial management gaps and address them in a timely manner. The scope and nature of these audits will vary significantly from client to client based on their needs and skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Grantees’ Capacity Building Support:
Mentor and train grantees’ staff and help them to rectify financial management problems;
Carry out regular training needs assessment, bridge the skill gaps by providing technical advice and guidance to staff and stakeholders through regular customized tailor made training;
Support clients to identify new business opportunities and disseminate good business financial management practices;
Ensure that Financial Accounting software acquired are fully utilized;
2. Monitor Grantees’ Compliance to Financial Procedures and Policies:
Assess how businesses are complying to rules, regulations, policies, standards etc. set by the Board and funding agencies, report shortfalls to management and UDET for action;
Develop, monitor and evaluate grantees’ internal control systems;
Identify and evaluate grantees’ business risk areas and develop appropriate remediation plans;
Actively monitor the use of donor disbursed funds and ensure accountability;
Intuitively review all financial accountability documents (i.e. receipts, vouchers, journals, etc.) to ensure their accuracy and reliability;
Conduct financial investigations on grantees whenever fraud is suspected;
3. Prepare Grantees for External Audits:
Travel to all projects to monitor and audit business and financial management systems to ensure appropriate solutions are developed and implemented in a timely manner and ensure compliance with prescribed auditing standards;
Prepare clients to pass external financial audits by building their capacities to better understand the importance of keeping accurate financial books;
Actively support the UDET FM & TO by participating in grantee entrance and exit audit meetings;
Support Grantees to address all audit findings;
4. Reporting:
Prepare field audit and field monitoring reports and distribute them reports to the relevant staff for remediation;
Make recommendations to clients aimed at making continuous improvements to client business operations.
Review Grantees’ financial reports in line with the set donor compliance guidelines and standards.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Accounting option), and/or ACCA, CPA equivalency.
At least three (3) years professional working experience as an internal auditor, with development-related work experience.
Working knowledge of institutional capacity building of community-based groups, demonstrated by accounting and financial management work experience with such groups.
Knowledge of adult training skills with community groups to develop financial management capacity of grassroots groups.
Proven ability to formulate and manage budgets, including maintenance of accounts, report preparation, and accounts reconciliation.
Demonstrated proficiency in Automated Data Processing technology, and experience with Excel, Pastel, Quick Books, Tally or equivalent accounting software.
Possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively to provide effective financial management skills.and services to a broad spectrum of colleagues and clients.
Good working knowledge of written and spoken English and two or more local languages.
Valid Driver’s License and willingness to travel frequently to rural areas.
