Maintenance Manager (2 Job Vacancies) – Kampala – Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd

About UEGCL:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd was incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act, 2012 on the basis of the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145. UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda. UEGCL’s key role is to – carry on the business of electric power generation and sale within Uganda or for export to neighbouring countries; build, operate and maintain Electricity Generation Plants; monitor the operation and maintenance of its Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations; provide Technical Support as and when required by the Government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; Implement Flagship Hydropower Plant Projects of Karuma (600MW) and Isimba (183MW; organize, support, encourage and maintain training facilities in technical and related fields, amongst others.

Job Summary: The Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the general oversight of all phases of plant Maintenance including physical maintenance, spares/inventory management, procurement specification, delivery inspections etc. Some of the salient responsibilities also include facility/physical plant up-keep and capital improvements and life of plant and performance projections. The Maintenance Manager will also be responsible for the planning, preparation and submission of the annual maintenance budget to management. The maintenance manager will work closely with the Operations Manager as a team to improve reliability and availability, as well as profitability of the generation plant.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide leadership for the successful day-to-day maintenance activities of the facility.
· Keenly review established maintenance schedules for the plant in order to establish optimum inventory levels that meet maintenance requirements for highest efficiency operation of the power plant.
· Manage the hiring and training of all maintenance personnel.
· Actively monitor maintenance expenses and research ways to reduce costs while maintaining generation efficiency.
· Work in liaison with the Environmental Health and Safety officers to ensure all members of the generation team are aware of safety policies to provide a safe workplace for our employees.
· Maintain and support a superior safety and housekeeping program, including all timely communication initiatives.
· Conduct performance appraisals and provide coaching and guidance to all maintenance staff.
· As much as is possible, remove all constraints on generation that might arise from maintenance shortcomings, allocate optimum human and material resources and direct maintenance employees to achieve established goals.
· Communicate with research and development as well as operations personnel to develop new generation strategies.
· Work closely with procurement department to develop and improve supplier relationships. Generate technical specifications for procurement of requisite spares and consumables.
· In charge of reviewing design proposals, specifications, manuals and other data submitted to him and evaluate the feasibility, cost and maintainability and applicability of such proposals.
· Reviewing and approving modifications to plant designs in order to ensure conformance with engineering design and improving performance specifications of the power plant
· Work closely with the Central Maintenance team oversees the installation, testing and commissioning of mechanical plant, machinery and equipment, to meet the requirements of the power plant.
· Apply knowledge of engineering principals to design/provide engineering solutions to technical/engineering problems- engineering solutions.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal applicant must hold an honors degree in electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, electronic engineering or related fields. A bias in Electrical control, automation and protection gear or mechanical and hydro mechanical automation or post graduate qualifications relating to power plant development, finance and management are desirable for first degree holders and an added advantage to applicants holding a Master’s degree and above.
· At least seven years’ experience in power generation plant or related industry.
· Good working knowledge of hydraulic machines, their operations, control and monitoring.
· Prior experience in a Design office or plant refurbishment projects are added advantages.
· Familiarity with use of CMMS and KKS Coding in Power plants and maintenance planning and scheduling spare parts and maintenance
· Excellent analytical skills
· Detailed knowledge regarding safety measures
· Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving abilities
· Ability to work under stress and be on call at any time
· Good leadership, communication and motivation skills
· Ability to work in a team as well as lead it
· Highly organized, systematic and precise in work
· Strong computer skills including the ability to use design software and prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Power Point and/or Access) to analyze data and trends.
