About UEGCL:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd was incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act, 2012 on the basis of the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145. UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda. UEGCL’s key role is to – carry on the business of electric power generation and sale within Uganda or for export to neighbouring countries; build, operate and maintain Electricity Generation Plants; monitor the operation and maintenance of its Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations; provide Technical Support as and when required by the Government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; Implement Flagship Hydropower Plant Projects of Karuma (600MW) and Isimba (183MW; organize, support, encourage and maintain training facilities in technical and related fields, amongst others.
Job Summary: The Operation Shift Supervisor/Shift Charge Engineer will mainly be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the power station and delivery of quality power to the Grid during a specified duration of the shift. The incumbent will be responsible for Access/Limitations into the power plant for operational, maintenance or any other requirement. He/she is the custodian of operational keys for the power plant ensuring safety for all staff and non-staff at the power plant. He/she is responsible for communications with the off taker and a first contact point in case of emergencies such as floods etc.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Receive and carry out instructions from the Operations Manager
· In charge of the coordination of communications between the load dispatch Centre and the power station
· Carry out switching as authorized in the Plant Operations Manuals or as may be instructed by the Operations Manager on a need arise basis.
· Responsible for issuing Permit-to- Work, Sanction-for- Test and Limitation-of-Access in accordance with regulations
· Responsible for issuing switching Instructions, safety instructions and isolation of work area prior to Issuing Permit to work
· Management of routine maintenance in accordance with schedules
· Responsible for accurate data collection, storage and information distribution to relevant authorities
· Ensures quality of Power generation through Voltage, Frequency and Vars
· Control/Regulations- Active and Reactive Power management
· Management of personnel safety, reporting of all hazardous events and accidents
· Act as the first point of Contact during Emergencies including such events as Force Majeure
· Attends to Faults that have occurred in order to rectify them himself, together with his team or call in technical support from Maintenance Team
· Responsible for verbal and written Reporting of all Faults/events, stating nature and gravity of faults/events to Operations Manager, Plant Manager and to the Central Maintenance Manager followed by preparation of Fault/Accident/Event Report for the CMMS
· Responsible for preparation of Shift handover report in accordance with protocol and giving a verbal brief of status of power Station, Permits in operation/not yet cancelled and the Events during his Shift.
· Responsible for first aid equipment, switching accessories, and custodian of Master Operation Keys and lockouts Systems
· Manages the plant firefighting team and calls in reinforcements from fire departments in case fire breaks out.
· Ensures collection storage and distribution of generation data including Hydrological data.
· Manage operation and regular inspection of all Plant and auxiliaries and any other equipment and installations such as water treatment plant, Fire Hydrant etc.
· Record and compile operational data by completing and maintaining forms, logs, or reports.
· Carry out emergency operations such as switching on standby emergency electrical generators, isolation of loads, switching on and off Units etc. to ensure safety of generation plant.
· Receive outage calls and requests necessary personnel during power outages or emergencies.
· Collect oil, water, or electrolyte samples for laboratory analysis.
· Regularly examine and test electrical power distribution machinery and equipment, using testing devices.
· Replenish electrolytes in batteries and oil in voltage transformers, and reset tripped electric relays.
· Perform any other duties as might be assigned by the operations Manager or as instructed by Management
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal applicant should hold an Honors Degree in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering. Successful Applicants will undergo intensive Training in power plant Operation at various locations prior to deployment.
· Proof of “Excellence” in Industrial Training from reputable Industrial establishment
· Applicants must be physically fit, able to climb several stairs
· Ability to work under extreme pressures and make calm and logical decisions
· Astute and good IQ
· Excellent leadership, communication and motivation skills
· Ability to work in a team as well as lead it
· Must be highly organized, systematic and precise in work
· Strong computer skills in spreadsheet and some of the Microsoft Office Products (Word, Power Point and/or Access) to analyze data and trends.
