The Ministry of Health (MoH) has received funding from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) under the New Funding Model to support the Uganda Malaria Reduction Strategy. Part of this grant is for sourcing for eligible talent to cover human resources gaps in the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in order to strengthen its capacity.
Job Summary: The Behavior Change Communication Specialist will lead a cross cutting intervention of advocacy and behavioral change communication necessary to achieve malaria prevention and control in Uganda. The incumbent will work directly with the NMCP and MOH staff and partners to develop and implement strategies to ensure that health promotion and behavior change messages on malaria prevention and treatment are consistent with the health needs of the targeted populations and are timely delivered in order to promote health behaviors within the communities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
In charge of developing a comprehensive advocacy and BCC work plans
Coordinate and collaborate with partners and stakeholders to coordinate the development and implementation of advocacy and BCC strategies
Significantly contribute to the identification and scaling-up of best practices in behavior change interventions;
Oversee the planning and coordination of commemoration/celebration of key international and national malaria events/days
Take part in the documentation and dissemination of programme reports
Actively participate in raising awareness of malaria control and prevention measures at national, local, and community levels.
Technically support Behavior Change Communication efforts related to appropriate care-seeking and treatment
Participate and take role in coordinating in ASBCC malaria working group
Identify key operational research priorities and provide technical support in execution of the agreed upon protocols
Perform any other duties assigned by the program manager National malaria control program
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mass communication or related field. Possession of a Master’s degree in Mass communication.
At least six years’ experience working with Mass Communication programmes/ institutions or related experience.
Past exposure and experience working with malaria control programs or the health sector at national, district and community levels is desirable.
Working knowledge and understanding of the factors that affect the behavior and practices of both service providers and users of malaria control interventions.
Familiarity with principles and approaches in community mobilization.
Strong leadership, strategic planning, interpersonal and communications skills.
Excellent analytical skills
Excellent report writing skills
Ability to work within a team and under pressure and handle multiple activities
Possess the ability to work with minimal supervision and self-motivation to accomplish tasks in time.
Fluency in oral and written English
