Business Development Manager – Kampala – Save the Children International

Job Summary: The Business Development Manager is primarily responsible for award acquisition in Save the Children Uganda (SCUG), ensuring a minimum of 10% annual portfolio growth. The BDM will work to identify donor opportunities, facilitate donor engagement, assist in the development of fundraising strategies and coordinate proposal development for large and strategic funding opportunities. S/He will write sections of proposals that speak to the overall capabilities, while coordinating the input of technical advisors, Operations, Finance, HR and Security into proposals and budgets. The BDM is expected to keep closely informed about donors’ interests and strategies as well as the progress of all major SCUG awards. Recognising that many conversations with donors involve a review or update around current grants as well as discussions about new opportunities, the Business Development Manager is also expected to keep closely informed about the progress of all major institutional grants and able to speak to results in key reporting documents. The role has an external orientation; the BDM is expected to liaise closely with members of Save the Children International, with in-country donor representatives and other stakeholders (potential NGO partners, etc.) to identify funding opportunities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The ideal candidate for the Save the Children Business Development Manager career placement should hold a Master’s degree in an area of social development or equivalent.
At least five years management in a both emergency and development contexts, preferably with solid experience in more than one of the Save the Children International priority sectors: education, protection, rights governance, HIV/AIDs, health and nutrition, and emergencies
Excellent writing/editing skills, budget development skills and presentation/communication skills.
Previous exposure and experience in presenting project information to donors and partners.
Experience in leading development of large-scale or strategic proposals, including the development of project budgets greater than $1 million;
Prior experience in developing large proposals for donors such as EC, USAID, OFDA, DFID, ECHO etc.
Experience of working with financial and other data systems to produce budgets, analyse data and track trends.
Ability to coach or mentor senior staff in proposal development or funding strategies
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Strong results orientation, with the ability to challenge existing mind-sets.
Previous exposure and experience in solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.
Ability to present complex information in a succinct and compelling manner.
Ability and willingness to dramatically change work practices and hours, and work with incoming surge teams, in the event of emergencies.
Fluency in English (both verbal and spoken).
Commitment to Save the Children International values and policies including willingness to abide by and enforce the Child Safeguarding policy.
Past exposure and experience of working with local partners and District Local Government in Child Rights Governance, Health, Nutrition, Education, HIV/AIDS or Child Protection is an added advantage.
Excellent analytical skills and strategic planning abilities.
Ability to establish and maintain conducive collegial relations and perform effectively as a member of a team.
Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills are a must.
Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Ability to intervene with crisis management or troubleshooting as necessary.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching.
Excellent time management and planning capacity.
Availability and willingness to work extra hours during times of humanitarian responses.
Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under strenuous conditions.
