About KATI Project:
KATI is an innovative youth-led social enterprise that aims to reduce youth unemployment in northern Uganda, stimulating a culture of transformative entrepreneurship. Building upon a successful pilot project delivered in 2013/4 in partnership with War Child UK, KATI will now be established as an independent, youth-owned organisation. KATI provides a unique package of business training, mentoring and access to competitive start-up loans for young people aged 17-30 years.
During the eighteen-month pilot, KATI supported 20 young people to become successful entrepreneurs. The business owners have become role models, supporting themselves and their families whilst passing on their knowledge, supporting a further 89 young people through informal training. The businesses are performing well, with 70% of the entrepreneurs left with disposable income and 47% having diversified to establish further businesses. KATI has also created further employment opportunities, with 84% of the businesses employing at least one additional youth. The initiative has caused a stir locally, as a refreshing and exciting alternative to traditional livelihood programmes. KATI was chosen as a winner of the Youth Employment Network Marketplace Award 2013.
War Child UK has successfully secured funding to establish KATI as an independent organisation, taking this innovative approach to scale and reaching many more aspiring young entrepreneurs in northern Uganda. This is a central aspect of War Child UK’s gradual scaling down of operations in Uganda, with assets and resources passed to KATI to continue the impact of the programme into the future, positioning young Ugandans as the leaders of their region’s economic regeneration.
