Pwc would like to recruit for Umeme, a public company cross listed on both the Uganda Securities Exchange and the Nairobi Securities Exchange with over 6,483 shareholders, including high value international institutional investors. Umeme operates under a concession with a structural monopoly in the distribution of electricity across Uganda, distributing 99% of electricity in Uganda through a single buyer model.
Job Summary: The Chief Safety Advisor will be responsible for the overall safety function of the company, with the responsibility for providing advice and guidance to the senior management team on the development of safety strategies, ensuring strict adherence to the company’s safety standards and dealing with as well as managing external stakeholders with regards to matters relating to safety and the environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop the company’s health and safety strategies and policies;
Develop safety culture change programmes and support the managing director and senior management team in co-ordinating safety and environmental management across the entire organisation;
Actively monitor and measure safety and environmental performance through a published audit programme;
Offer guidance on the development of safety and environmental management systems that comply with international best practice;
Actively monitor changes in safety, health and environmental legislation, associated regulations and ensure company compliance with the changes;
Offer expert guidance to management and directors- on all matters related to safety, health and environment;
Establish general safety management systems and audit frameworks within the company;
Determine and manage the safety and environmental reporting to external stakeholders;
Ensure the company complies with safety, health and environment undertakings in the financing agreements;
Guide the accident investigation process and ensure reports are accurate, objective, timely, and valid, before submission to the senior management team accident review meeting;
Co-ordinate the Board sub-committee on environment safety and governance , ensuring governance, oversight, and engagement throughout the annual cycle;
Mentor and develop the safety and environmental officers and auditors;
Identify and implement appropriate staff training and awareness requirements on safety, health and environment throughout the organisation;
Co-ordinate working groups on key safety initiatives.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or any other related fields
At least five years’ experience in health and safety management.
Possession of professional qualification in health and safety management is an added advantage
Excellent communication and written skills;
Prior experience gained at a senior level with respect to health, safety and environment in a similar or related industry;
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; and
Proficiency with the international health and safety standards.
