Justice and Reconciliation Project (JRP) is a non-profit organisation with a country wide mandate and with its office based in Gulu. JRP works to support local level transitional justice processes through seeking to understand and explain the interests, needs, concerns and views of the communities affected by various conflicts in Uganda. Our work focuses on the active involvement of communities in documentation, research and advocacy on local level transitional justice issues as a means of giving a voice to the affected communities.
Job Summary: The Documentation Officer will work in the documentation department whose role involves documentation of conflict-related experiences and memories of individuals, communities, and demographic and victim groups (e.g. women, parents of the missing, former combatants) in order to promote the preservation of history, acknowledgement of loss and promotion of reconciliation and healing in relation to the LRA war and other conflicts. Adopting a participant research method, this work-stream will involve those affected in an on-going process of documentation, encompassing a critical reflection on their experiences, and empowerment. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Carrying out fieldwork in specific locations in line with the objectives of JRP and the priorities of the documentation team.
· Oversee research design, field research, analysis, verification and dissemination of findings to multi-stakeholders
· In charge of initiating program plans and developing flexible research methodologies with the participation of victims, survivors and community members.
· Working closely with partner organisations and relevant stakeholders undertaking similar work.
· In charge of organising and attending meetings and forums relevant to the documentation work of JRP.
· Ensuring that the Work-stream meets specific output targets and milestones set out by respective donors. Participate in the recruitment, induction, development and supervision of departmental staff, volunteers, international/local interns and students.
· Ensuring that the documentation department works in synergy and collaboration with other departments in meeting JRP’s overall objectives.
· Staying abreast of research and changes in policy relevant to the conflict-affected populations
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of Social Sciences and Humanities, law, human rights, peace/conflict studies and transitional justice. Track record of experience in these fields shall be considered in this position.
· Four years’ experience with conflict- affected communities, 2 years of which should have been undertaking field work related to research and documentation.
· At least two years’ experience at a senior departmental level, preferably as leader of a team.
· Proven knowledge and experience in research, policy advocacy and leadership is highly desirable.
· Excellent oral and written communication English
· Preference to a good oral knowledge of the Luo language is desirable though not required.
· Strong team-working skills
· Good administrative and financial management skills
· Excellent negotiating skills
· Ability to undertake complex reporting based on various donor requirements
· Computer literacy skills i.e. Word processing and spread sheets
· Other language skills relevant to the area of work: Uganda, Southern Sudan and DRC
