About US:
Makerere University Center for Health & Population Research (MUCHAP), previously the Iganga-Mayuge Health & Demographic Surveillance Site; is a population based research center covering part of Iganga and Mayuge districts. The center supports multi-disciplinary policy relevant research as well as graduate research training. The key activities include (i) registering and monitoring health and demographic dynamics in a population (births, deaths, migration), (ii) providing unique, essential, household level information individually tailored for policy, planning and research needs, (iii) providing a platform for training in applied field research and practical health, agro-social economic and demographic survey methods to students, staff and researchers and (iv) to providing a platform for trials that can test and measure health interventions.
Job Summary: The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall strategic leadership to the organisation, manage the implementation of policies of the Board, and ensure efficient utilization of both physical and non-physical resources.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Develop and implement financially sound strategic initiatives directly supporting MUCHAP’s vision, mission, goals and objectives.
· Establish appropriate dissemination and marketing strategies for research outputs to various stakeholders to ensure increased visibility and translation of research findings into policy
· Actively mobilise adequate resources to support the programmes of the organisation and financial sustainability
· Manage and determine appropriate short and long term human resource requirements for the organisation.
· Design and implement sound administrative, procurement, financial and human resource systems for efficient and effective running of the organization.
· The incumbent will oversee the human, material and financial resources of the organization in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures and domestic laws.
· Build and strengthen working relationships and collaborative arrangements with the host district governments, community, government, NGOs and international universities and institutions for the promotion of the organisation’s research agenda.
· Serve as Secretary to the Board of Directors meetings.
· Prepare and send periodic reports to the Board (including Committees of the Board) and development partners in accordance with the prescribed formats
· Perform any other duties as assigned from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal candidate should hold a first Degree in Health Sciences, Population Studies, Statistics, Social Sciences or Demography and a Master’s Degree in Public Health, Demography, Population Studies
· A minimum of five (5) years’ working experience in a health research organization or conducting research two of which should have been at a managerial level.
· Prior exposure and experience in writing grant winning proposals.
· Significant experience in publishing scientific papers in relevant fields.
· Strong leadership and team building skills with proven experience in developing and maintaining a strong senior management team.
· Excellent problem solving and negotiation skills.
