Trust for Africa’s Orphans Uganda (TAOU) is a local NGO whose mission is to improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable members of the community through agricultural transformation, learning to improve and expand their focus towards skilled, transparent and business-minded members of the community in northern Uganda. It achieves this through; sustainable farming practices, Livestock farming, Environmental protection and conservation practices, Support provision of education and skills, Support provision of health and sanitation services to the target communities, Land rights awareness, Implementation of enterprise development and income generation activities; and advocacy for promotion child/widows protection policies among others.
About Project:
TAOU is undertaking a project named Agri-Enterprise in Sunflower, Soya bean, Simsim and Sorghum for small scale farmers to be implemented over three years with relevant district structures in Pader district commencing on 1st April 2016. This district face the challenges from climate change induced prolonged droughts and food insecurity as well as refugee influx as a result of conflict in the neighbouring state of South Sudan.
Job Summary: The Extension Workers will facilitate in areas of integrated livelihood such as crop science agronomy, sustainable land use management and rural development as well as natural resources management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The jobholders will mobilize and facilitate the process of group formation for the farmers
Work closely with other staff in collection and verification of baseline data
In charge of the identification and registration of beneficiaries, organisation of the training clusters, commencement of training in Sustainable Agriculture, provision of crop inputs, planting and nurturing of the crops, ensure correct harvest and short term storage of crop products and bulking them in the Coop store
Carry out training and demonstration for profitable and strategic enterprises using a participatory approach (hands on) to instill better farming skills and knowledge to the beneficiaries and their neighbours.
Offer support in the development of the capacity of the farmers in the area of agriculture through identification of gaps and identifying possible capacity building needs
Guide farmers on best crop husbandry practices, diagnosis and control (where applicable) of notifiable crop pests and diseases and post-harvest handling
Work closely with the Project Manager to draw project work plans and budget, and reporting.
Provide extension services to the beneficiaries in farming methods of selected crops and quality standards set by the suppliers of inputs and companies that demand the products
Work in liaison with the Project Manager and the Cooperative Officers to mobilize and register the farmers into cooperatives and link them to crop buyers
Mentor and train farmers in group dynamics and crop development
Organize exchange visits between groups to enable them to learn from each other
Carry out regular on farm support visit to the project farmers to assess performance and support them to set up and maintain model sustainable farms.
Work closely with the advisory committee members and other local community leaders, monitor the progress and impact of the project activities on the community against specified goals and objectives
Perform any other duties that may be assigned to you by your supervisor that promotes the aims and objectives of the organisation.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Environmental Sciences relevant discipline. Possession of a Post Graduate Diploma in the related field will be an added advantage.
At least three years’ experience and demonstrable skills in designing and implementing climate interventions
Fluent in Luo or Acholi
