Job Summary: The Hub Director will take leadership of the Uganda Hub, working through the management team to ensure all areas of financial, programmatic, people, quality and performance functions are implemented to a high standard. The Uganda Director will drive national governance alongside the Board, to ensure that the agency delivers its ambitious strategy
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Hub Leadership: The Hub Director is responsible for overall leadership of the Hub together with the Core Leadership Team. Restless Development Uganda has an ambitious and growing programme portfolio in over twenty districts, working with young people and a wide variety of partners supported by a variety of bi-lateral and multilateral donors and large charitable foundations. In addition, the Hub is increasingly taking on global and regional leadership responsibilities, leading programming that covers multiple countries in the region and providing thought leadership on research and youth livelihoods for Restless Development globally.
Strategic Planning: Restless Development is in the second year of an ambitious new global strategy and Uganda has been a leading example of the way the agency is changing and growing to unleash the power of youth led change. The Director will work alongside the Uganda Advisory Board, Core Leadership Team to keep driving this growth and change in Uganda, to articulate and translate the strategy to the Ugandan context and to current and potential partners, and to achieve the strategic vision of the agency.
Business Development and Partnership: The Director will work alongside the Senior Programme Design and Partnership Manager to deliver against the Hub’s fundraising strategy and to continue to access and create new partnerships and funding opportunities. The Hub has recently undergone a period of rapid growth and enjoys a strong reputation among donors and the development community in Uganda. The next few years will require a consolidation of the current funding position and identifying the best opportunities for
further expansion – geographically, thematically and in terms of funding. The Director will also oversee compliance with multiple donor requirements and ensure that partnerships are active and fulfilling their full strategic potential.
Programme design, innovation and thought leadership: The Hub Director will play an important role in overseeing programme design and driving programme innovation in line with the strategic priorities of the agency and needs and opportunities in Uganda. Restless Development Uganda has recently been adopting innovative approaches to youth and agriculture, private sector engagement, youth-led data-driven accountability and economic inclusion of girls and young women. Uganda has also been taking the global lead for research, designing a clear offer for youth- led research, forging new research partnerships and coordinating the
MasterCard Foundation’s Youth Think Tank across 7 African countries, led by the International Research Manager. The Director will be responsible for ensuring that this drive for innovation continues and is translated into thought leadership, both externally and within the agency.
People and Performance: The Uganda Hub boasts a young and dynamic team of over 80 staff across 5 offices and with multiple staff seconded into a dozen partner offices. The Director, together with the Head of Operations, will work to maintain a strong value based culture of communication and collaboration within the team and ensure systems and processes for quality and accountability are in-step with the evolving needs of the agency and its strategic and programmatic ambition.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The Restless Development HUB Director should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject and Masters or relevant work experience
A minimum of four years of senior management experience in fundraising, programmes, finance, operations and/or human resources ideally in the development sector
Proven track record of success in fundraising and partnerships development
Previous experience in distance management and working with multiple offices
Extensive knowledge of relevant national and international policy in the areas of youth empowerment, livelihoods, sexual and reproductive health, and civic engagement.
Willingness to travel nationally and occasionally in the region or internationally
Fluent on both written and spoken English
Strong leadership skills, including ability to define a collective vision for the organisation and bring the team on board
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Prior experience in private sector engagement is desired
Previous experience in policy engagement and working with government stakeholders is an added advantage
Previous experience of managing growth and rapid organisational change is also desired
The successful applicant will be results oriented with good analytical skills, able to deliver against an ambitious vision and strategy.
Excellent interpersonal skills required to develop and manage effective working relationships across a large team of young and talented staff.
