Appliance World Ltd (the company) is one of the largest organizations in Uganda dealing in consumer electronics (refrigerators, microwaves, audio products, televisions, and washing machines), commercial air conditioning and mechanical ventilation, mobile phones, computers/network monitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Legal Officer will be tasked with initiating and pursuing all legal proceedings as required by the Company i.e., prepare summonses, defences, submissions and other pleadings in civil cases both “for and against” the Company
Prepare, file and plead cases in Commercial Court in pursuit of amounts owed to the Company.
Guide on civil matters that should be directed to external counsel.
Work closely with and assist external Counsel in the performance of their obligation
Advise on statutory compliances.
Research and prepare legal opinions on various civil matters including claims for compensation against the Company.
Draft and/or review legal letters, contracts and agreements and monitor legal obligations under agreements to ensure compliance, as requested.
Provide sound legal advice to the Company and make recommendations to Management as necessary.
The Legal Officer will also be responsible for collecting of payments which are overdue according to the terms of payment given to the client. This starts with visiting clients to writing letters and if this doesn’t work then you will be compelled to use the law. A lot of your time will be spent in ensuring that money will be collected.
In case an employee absconds, you will be responsible for ensuring that money owed to the company as per the terms and conditions of the contract, is collected. This means that you will need to know all staff homes and their bio data.
For any transaction that the company enters into, it is your duty to ensure that the contract is present.
