NIE Manager – (Newspapers in Education) – Kampala – The New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd

About New Vision:
The Vision Group incorporated as the New Vision Printing & Publishing Company Limited (NVPPCL), started business in March 1986. It is a multimedia business housing newspaper, magazines, internet publishing, television, radio broadcasting, commercial printing, advertising and distribution services. NVPPCL is listed on the Uganda Stock Exchange, with an expected turnover of over UGX 60 billion (FY 2010/2011).

Job Summary: The NIE Manager- (Newspapers in Education) will popularize newspapers and grow their demand and appreciation among school children as a means to grow and guarantee newspaper audiences / market and start a culture of sales by subscription in schools and other sectors generally. This will be achieved through well planned school activities that will include, among others, demonstrations on the use of Newspapers in Education in schools and to potential donors/partners and other stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Edit the NIE pullout for the newspaper and other media platforms and develop creative concepts / projects to keep the programme fresh and growing
Responsible for NIE demonstrations in schools and for any other stakeholders in order to persuade them to use newspapers as a teaching aid / tool.
Grow school subscription copies of the New Vision / regional newspapers by encouraging all visited schools to buy a newspaper for each class thereby increase newspaper copy sales.
Increase the presence of Vision print products in schools and raise brand awareness of the products among teachers, parents and students.
Mentor and train teachers to use the newspaper in developing schemes of work and lesson plans in order to facilitate the learning process.
Identify NIE sponsors and support the advertising team to generate NIE-based revenue
Actively co-ordinate schools’ NIE clubs, mobilize content from them for the pull-out and other NIE publications.
Works closely with newspaper and broadcast editors for coverage of NIE activities to create public awareness of the programme.
Generate NIE story ideas and follow-ups to ensure NIE activities are covered in all New Vision platforms.
Develop contacts with educational institutions, local government, education ministry, the private sector, the donor community, NGOs and other stakeholders to generate ideas and funding for the projects.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The ideal candidate should hold an honors degree from a recognized university preferably in Education/Mass Communication. Applicants with Media / Journalism training and practice have an added advantage
Computer proficiency in written and spoken English.
Possess the ability to conceptualize, design, and sell NiE projects and proposals
Ability to communicate and interact with a wide range of stakeholders such as school children, teachers, parents, policy makers, sponsors, journalists, etc.
Computer literacy skills especially in Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop.
Mature, energetic and self-driven individual
Working knowledge and / or experience in marketing and sales, or willingness and ability to learn these skills, is a bonus
Possess the ability to write news articles, features, reports and proposals
Ability to teach / train adults and children alike, and to learn as well.
High degree of creativity and innovativeness is essential.

Age: Between 28 and 40 years.
