Saferworld is an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with local people affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security. We do this by supporting effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others. We have a strong thematic focus to our conflict prevention work prioritising: people’s security and access to justice services; gender norms that cause and perpetuate violent conflict; the impact of external conflict drivers including weapons flows; conflict-sensitive political, economic, development, and security engagement; and inclusive and accountable governance and peacebuilding processes.

Job Summary: The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator will primarily be responsible for leading Saferworld’s policy and advocacy work in select countries in the East Africa region. This includes linking evidence and analysis from country programmes at the local level into Saferworld’s policy and advocacy work at the national and international levels. To be successful in this, the Policy and Advocacy Coordinator will build relations with key partners including civil society organisations, and will also work closely with Project Managers and Project Coordinators.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Policy and Advocacy:
· Actively contribute to the development of the country programme strategy, particularly in relation to the strategy for state, national and international-level policy and advocacy;
· Regularly monitor official and public debates on security and justice, governance, peace building and conflict-sensitivity in the region and identify opportunities for Saferworld to provide input into these policy debates;
· Actively contribute to research and analysis of the context and policy debates at state, national and international levels to help address conflict and peacebuilding in the region;
· The incumbent will contribute to the development of evidence-based policy positions and messaging, and clearly articulate the issues in publications and materials (e.g., comment pieces, briefings, reports, talking points).

Representation:
· Work in close consultation with the relevant Country Manager, represent Saferworld externally at the national, regional and international level, as required;
· Build and maintain relationships and partnerships with civil society, NGOs, UN agencies, donors, government, private sector, and other key stakeholders at the national-level, and the state- and international-levels, as appropriate and required;
· Attend relevant coordination, information-sharing and other relevant forums at the national, regional and international level on behalf of Saferworld, and provide feedback to Saferworld colleagues.

Programme Design, Fundraising and Reporting:
· Actively participate in ongoing analysis on political context, security and justice, and peace building at the national level and identify areas for strategy and programme development;
· Support in reporting, fundraising, and monitoring and evaluation processes as may be requested by the relevant country manager;
· Contribute to the drafting and timely submission of funding proposals and donor reports.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal candidate for the Saferworld Policy and Advocacy Coordinator job opportunity should hold a Bachelor’s degree in development studies, international relations, peace and conflict studies, or a relevant political or social science discipline – or equivalent professional experience (a Master’s degree would be an advantage)
· At least two to three years of relevant conflict prevention, peace building, or development work in East Africa
· Significant exposure understanding of and experience in engaging with civil society and governments, networking, and representing an organisation at the national and international level
· Previous experience of writing research materials and advocacy briefings would be an advantage
· Experience developing and cultivating partnerships with local organisations, including at long distance
· Broad knowledge and understanding of East Africa, particularly in terms of security and conflict dynamics and actors, key political, economic, and social issues, and peace and governance processes
· Solid knowledge of civil society networks in the region
· Working knowledge of policy and policy-making processes at national, regional and international levels
· Strong policy, advocacy and communication skills with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks
· Strong research, analytical, and writing skills with attention to detail and with the ability to translate complex issues into a level appropriate for the general population and policymakers
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse audiences and ability to work in a non-partisan manner appreciating cultural and ethnic diversity
· Fluency in written and spoken English is essential (Arabic is an advantage)
· Demonstrated organisational and project management skills
· Ability to work on his/her own, but also effectively as part of a team, including with those based in other locations
· Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), web based communications, and social media
· Ability to travel frequently within East Africa
