*Location: Yumbe, Republic of Uganda
*Salary: $800-$1,250/month
*Duration: 4 months, by the end of May (possible for extension)
*Project Title: Improving the access and learning environment of Primary Education in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in Yumbe District, the Republic of Uganda
*Proejct Description:
a. To construct temporary school facilities with furniture in the settlement and host community
b. To provide school bags in the settlement and host community
c. To organize class management trainings for teachers
d. To organize sports event for primary school pupils both from refugee settlement and host community
Overview of AAR Japan
AAR Japan was founded in 1979 with a mission to help refugees from Indochina, and as a civil organization without any political, religious, or ideological affiliations. It has since then grown into an international NGO approved and registered by the United Nations. AAR Japan has five main pillars of activities; 1) emergency assistance, 2) assistance to persons with disabilities, 3) landmine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) action, 4) action against infectious diseases and 5) public awareness raising about global issues in Japan. Since the beginning, AAR Japan has operated in over 60 countries. Currently we are active in 17 countries and areas, including 4 African countries namely Kenya, Zambia, Sudan and Uganda.
Scope of work
The Project Officer staff shall,
a. Supervise and provide guidance to external experts to conduct class management trainings
b. Coordinate with schools, partner organizations and local authorities to organize sports event
c. Monitor and control construction progress of school facilities with contractors and report to supervisors
d. Supervise the delivery and installation of the school furniture and learning materials in school in Bidibidi in coordination with suppliers and the school management
e. Coordinate and supervise locally-hired contractors and temporary assistant staff for project
f. Assist in administrative works such as arranging for flight and accommodation for visitors and controlling petty cash for project
g. Attend coordination meetings to represent AAR Japan
h. Assist Needs Assessment for the future projects
i. Perform any other duties if requested by supervisors
Personnel specification and selection criteria
Experience required:
a. Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant field
b. More than 5 years of experience relevant to the scope of work
c. Experience in conducting projects related to education, especially education in emergency and multi-cultural context
d. Experience in facilitation for workshops and/or seminars
e. Experience in working with aid organization
f. Experience in peace education activity (preferred)
Qualifications required:
a. Ugandan citizen, residing in Uganda and able to station in Yumbe
b. Strong motivation to be part of an aid organization
c. Excellent at working as a part of the team, especially as middle-level manager.
d. Solid drafting/reporting skills
e. Fluency in speaking and writing English
*Fluency in Arabic or Kakwa is an asset
f. PC literacy including word processing (MS Word) and spreadsheets (MS Excel)
g. Strong co-ordination and negotiation skills with stakeholders and problem solving skills
h. Culturally sensitive and high level of diplomacy and tact
i. Punctuality
