Research Officer – Kampala – African Field Epidemiology Network

About US:
The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is a not for profit, networking alliance and service organization that brings together field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) across Africa working side by side with Ministries of Health, regional and international partners. AFENET works to strengthen epidemiological and disease surveillance capabilities of Africa countries that are critical to meeting the requirements of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy, and the International Health Regulations (IHR). Established in 2005, AFENET has supported more than 20 African countries across sub-Saharan Africa advance their capabilities in early detection and response to infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Grant Research and Analysis:
Develop annual goals and strategy for submitting grant proposals to new and existing funders.
Solicit and understand funding needs from AFENET staff.
Actively monitor funding trends and opportunities for relevance to AFENET strategic priorities, initiatives, and projects.
Carry out in-depth research of funding opportunities and analyze any such funding announcements for potential fit with AFENET’s priorities and recommend specific funding opportunities to pursue.
Share relevant information on available funding opportunities with AFENET members
Maintain an accurate database of institutional funders and prospects.
Develop and submit letters of intent as required.
Participate in writing concept notes

2. Proposal Development:
Actively support process of obtaining internal approval for grant pursuit, including identifying writing team members.
Negotiate terms of grant agreements in close liaison with the Executive Director.
In instances of partnerships, ensure AFENET’s interests are taken care of through the execution of the teaming agreements.
Support program staff develop budget proposals and related information.
Actively coordinate and actively participate in the collection of relevant information for inclusion into the technical section- of the grant application including literature review, methodologies and/or interview of relevant persons.
Regularly review and edit final grant document for scientific merit, comprehensiveness, competitiveness and compliance with AFENET’s and funders’ requirements.

3. Dissemination:
Technically support scientific writing/publication at the Secretariat and within the network; this includes and is not limited to review of drafts, facilitation at Scientific conferences.
Participate in review of technical reports
Participate in AFENET Conference preparations

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The Research Officer should preferably hold a Bachelors’ Degree in Medicine, Science or relevant discipline. Possession of a Master’s degree in Public Health is added advantage.
Additional training and experience in Grants research, management plus Project proposal writing is required.
Proven and relevant work experience in Project Grants work in NGO environment is preferred and accordingly exceptional experience in similar duties can be considered in lieu of above education background,
Computer literacy skills i.e. working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications.
