Job Summary: The Sub Editor ETOP will mainly edit stories and design pages in line with the Etop strategy to make the newspaper value-for-money, self-sustaining and profitable, while advancing society.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Edit stories in standard grammar and ensure that they are balanced and fair and suit Etop’s house-style and editorial policy. The copy must, therefore, be free of libel and inaccuracies, logical, coherent and appealing to readers, and make the newspaper credible and authoritative.
Where necessary, the incumbent will re-write, crop, restructure and re-angle the story in consultation with writers and senior editors.
Write catchy headlines and captions that suit the stories and photos; and attract I readers.
Coach and provide constructive feedback to the writers to ensure stories are multi-sourced, balanced, up-to-date, and complete and suit Etop’s style and editorial policy
Responsible for novel design to ensure it appears attractive and easy to navigate pages that enhance the reader-friendly house-style, in order to maximise use of the valuable space available on each page.
Meet both individual and section deadlines to ensure that pages are delivered to the Production Department in time.
Actively participate in reviewing the newspaper and proof-reading to eliminate repetitions, typos, general errors, and to improve content.
Place the right adverts on the page correctly and alert supervisors in case of any alterations.
Save pages on the appropriate network folders for easy access by Website, Production, the Editors and other stakeholders.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The candidate should hold a Good Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Literature in English or any relevant field from a recognized University
Three years’ experience in working as a journalist.
Proficiency in written and spoken Ateso.
Computer literacy skills especially in Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop and in-design,
Possess the ability to work under tight deadlines.
