Director Research and Grants – Kampala – Joint Clinical Research Centre

About JCRC:
Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is a national Ugandan organization that was established in 1991 as a medical institution and HIV AIDS Centre of Excellence specializing in medical research, health care and training.

Job Summary: The Director Research and Grants will be responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of research and grants activities of JCRC. He/she will also directs the work of development teams to successfully compete for grant funds and support the development of plans for new and improved programs and services at JCRC. He/she will guide and support the grant manager in monitoring the progress of grant-funded projects to ensure successful implementation in accordance with grant contract terms and requirements and shall direct research development and promotion within JCRC and her partners/collaborators.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Take lead of the project planning and proposal development activities for grant teams
Steer the development of strategies for grant funds, directs cross-functional teams in developing proposals for new and enhanced programs and services assists with setting project goals, objectives, timelines, budgets and sustainability.
Actively contribute to the Writing and editing of grant proposals, researches institutional and funding agency policies to ensure proposed activities and budgets are in accordance with the JCRC’s policies and funding agency’s requirements.
Technically support the development of strategic partnerships with business, industry, educational institutions, economic development and community-based agencies; facilitates external partnership meetings; leads partnership development activities; negotiates roles, duties and contributions; drafts agreements, subcontracts and other documents.
Evaluate requests for funding opportunities, researches supporting data and best practices; analyzes funding agency’s requirements and anticipates JCRC’s competitive position for each opportunity.
Significantly contribute to weekly meetings with departmental staff to track development progress and direct collaborative efforts that ensure effective and timely development of proposals; provides periodic reports on grant development activities to the JCRC management meetings in accordance with the institutional strategic plan.
Technically support the top management in the planning of funding strategies, priority and special projects.
Participate in various institutional councils, committees, community and professional organizations.
Lead the departmental activities including but not limited to annual planning process, strategic planning, annual work plan, staff retreats, professional development, budgeting, policies and procedures review.
Performs any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should preferably hold a Master’s degree in science disciplines but preferably with PhD from accredited and recognized university.
Eight or more years of professional work experience three of which should have been at the same level in research, grant proposal and development grant administration and compliance.
Significant experience in administration in Research institutions, funding agencies or institutions of higher education
Working knowledge of Principles and practices of health related research
Prior experience in Managing research grants/ fond mobilisation
Good knowledge and understanding of principles and processes of clinical data analysis
