About MRC:
The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical Research Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Uganda under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.
Job Summary: The Health Economist will provide health economic input across selected projects and programmes in the Unit, working as part of multi-disciplinary team within Uganda and, occasionally, internationally. He/she will be a key member of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of researchers. The incumbent will also play a focal role in contributing to research that is expected to provide important data for health planning and health policy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Carry out research on a range of economic factors, including the costs of health care, both at health facility and patient level; the cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve health care and access. Interventions will cut across a range of programs in non-communicable diseases including Mental Health, HIV and other infections.
· Conduct modelling as required, present economic evidence and write up this evidence.
· Analyse findings and write up for research reports, conference presentations and peer reviewed journals.
· Supervise fieldworkers involved in data collection and provide training support as may be required for them to undertake their work.
· The incumbent will serve as the Project leader for selected projects, as may be required.
· Represent the Unit on health economics at national and international gatherings of project collaborators and represent the Programme Head at such meetings if required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal candidate should preferably hold a Master’s degree in Health Economics, Development Economics, Quantitative Economics, Economic Policy and Planning or a related subject.
· Health related qualification e.g. Public Health.
· A minimum of two years’ experience, preferably one of which will have been, spent in research, collecting health facility and patient costs for economic analysis.
· Prior experience or knowledge of discrete choice experiments.
· Excellent computer skills in advanced Microsoft excel especially in the use of Pivot tables and STATA/R Statistic.
· Organized with excellent attention to detail.
· Excellent management skills.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
