Senior Laboratory Technologist – Entebbe – Medical Research Council

About MRC:
The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical Research Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Uganda under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.

Job Summary: The Senior Laboratory Technologist will carry out laboratory-based immunological research.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Responsibilities:
Actively participate in planning laboratory experiments and projects
Participate in proposal writing, particularly in laboratory components
Find and read literature relevant to the work; participate in sharing knowledge through laboratory meetings and journal clubs
Prepare documents for ethical approval, including material transfer agreements
The jobholder will develop new assays, or adapt and implement assays that are new to the CiSP laboratory
Prepare and review standard operating procedures
Carry out regular analyses of laboratory related work, with the support of supervisors
Work closely with international collaborators regarding assay development
Actively participate in writing publications, sometimes as lead author
Present work at national and international meetings
Assist in capacity building by demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and to students on attachments
Participate in routine laboratory tasks and duties, and supervising laboratory technicians to undertake them, including;
SOP-guided laboratory experiments
Implementing GCLP practices
Ensuring that required reagents and supplies are in sufficient stocks and are stored appropriately
Entering and cleaning data, preparing reports on experiments
The incumbent will also engage in proactive problem prevention of GCLP practice
Deputise for the laboratory manager in his absence
Render support with other laboratory procedures and projects as and when required
2. Financial Responsibilities: Prepares reagent/consumable orders for subsequent review and approval by supervisors

3. People Management Responsibilities:
Provide mentorship to one or more laboratory technicians
Supervise students working in the laboratory
4. Corporate/Local Responsibilities & Requirements: The job holder must at all times carry out their responsibilities with due regard to the MRC’s: Code of conduct, Equality & Diversity Policy, Health & Safety Policy, Information technology policy and Data Protection Act

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should at least hold a Master’s degree in a relevant subject or equivalent research experience
A minimum of four years of relevant laboratory experience
Good Clinical Practice and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice certification
Ability to learn and conduct assays required, according to study protocols
