Horticulture Officer – RWANU

About USAID RWANU Project:
ACDI/VOCA is an international NGO that is currently implementing the USAID-funded PL 480 Title II Development Food Assistance Program entitled “Resiliency through Wealth, Agriculture, and Nutrition in Karamoja (RWANU).” The RWANU Program aims to reduce food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in selected sub-counties of Amudat, Moroto, Napak and Nakapiripirit. The Program’s strategic objectives are (1) improved availability and access to food and (2) reduced malnutrition in pregnant and lactating mothers and children under five. The RWANU Program takes a preventive approach to reducing malnutrition, focusing on the first 1,000 days of life when conditional food rations will have the highest impact. RWANU promotes diversified livelihoods strategies including linkages to market opportunities to ensure long-term food security and resilience to food insecurity shocks.

Job Summary: The Horticulture Officer will support the USAID RWANU Project by organizing and carrying out Farmer training groups to help them become more productive horticulture producers.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide specific technical support to RWANU field based staff in Horticulture.
· The incumbent will also keenly do field follow up to horticulture producers to transform them to be commercial vegetable farmers with links to farming as a business and marketing skills.
· The incumbent will also assist groups in formation of horticulture marketing committees and associations.
· Work closely with the FEWs and Famers Training Groups (FTGs) in setting of Horticultural demonstrations, Household Kitchen gardens and Commercial horticultural gardens.
· Evaluate groups and see potential of irrigation for increased output.
· Ensure field trainings on Horticulture are conducted appropriately by the FEWs to the different groups and that the training is practiced in individual household gardens.
· Actively monitor the progress of Horticultural groups assigned to the different FEWs.
· Ensure high quality data collection of horticulture activities
· Prepare and submit monthly reports of field activities and ensure right information is captured in the reports.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The applicant should preferably hold a degree or Diploma in Agricultural Science with a bias in horticulture crops.
· A minimum of two years field experience in agricultural interventions with an understanding of group work approaches.
· Computer literacy skills with proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets.
· Ability to coach and supervise staff
· Excellent communication and reporting skills
· Excellent interpersonal skills
· Ability to work under minimum supervision and meeting deadlines
· Fluent written and spoken English language skills.
· Karamajong language skills highly desirable.
