SOS Children’s Villages Uganda is an indigenous non-government, social development organisation affiliated to SOS Children’s Villages International, a worldwide child care organisation, currently running Children’s Villages and other projects in 135 countries around the world. SOS has been working in Uganda since 1991, and runs Children’s Villages and other projects at Kakiri, Entebbe (Abaita Ababiri), Gulu and in Fort Portal – Kabarole district.
Job Summary: The Programme Officer will be responsible for youth development i.e. guiding the individual development of the children and youths assigned to him/her towards their independence. The Programme Officer plays a focal role in guiding individual youths and organizes and leads youth activities within the frame of SOS youth-care model. The incumbent leads the youths to create a supportive environment where they can develop life skills and responsibility for themselves. He/ she in addition respects and acts within the rights of the child context.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees the implementation of Youth development programmes and activities within the Children’s Village.
Guides and supports personal development of youth adults living in the youth homes.
The incumbent creates opportunities for contact with young adult’s family of origin, SOS family and community.
Actively promotes and strengthens a professional and positive working relationship with SOS Mothers
Develops and initiates educational and career development programmes of young adults by training and helping them find employment opportunities.
Provides and creates a supportive environment where youths can develop life skills and responsibility for themselves.
Organizes and maintains a record system to facilitate the development of individual youth
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The ideal candidate should hold a good university qualification in child and youth development, education, social sciences, development studies or social work .
Additional training and experience in basic counseling is desirable.
A minimum of three to four years’ experience working with youth and children in a social/educational development setting.
Possession of career guidance skills and involvement in co-curricular activities e.g. sports/games will be an added advantage.
The individual should be committed, honest, a good team player and have initiative coupled with passion and interest for youth work.
Age and Sex: Between 33 and 36 years Male
